A group challenging the Nashville SC stadium project in court filed an injunction Friday, asking that work at the future venue’s site be stopped while lawsuits are pending.
The group Save Our Fairgrounds has mounted a lawsuit against the city over the stadium plan, which calls for a new soccer-specific venue to built at The Fairgrounds Nashville. Through the ongoing lawsuit, Save Our Fairgrounds is contending that the stadium would take away existing parking and interfere with current uses at the complex.
In the latest step in that case, the group filed an injunction Friday asking a judge to issue a temporary restraining order that bars all work on the future stadium site from taking place as long as the litigation is pending. A hearing on the request is slated for March 13. More from Fox 17 Nashville:
“Essentially, we are asking the city to abide by its own law,” Save Our Fairgrounds President Duane Dominy said.
Dominy says it is in the city’s policies and ordinances that none of this can happen without a voter referendum.
“Now this is not just charter law. This is actual, passed law from 2014 that says the charter referendum of 2011 requires them to hold a voter referendum if they want to redevelop the fairgrounds,” Dominy added.
Notably, this actions comes on the heels Nashville SC ownership and Nashville mayor John Cooper reaching a modified agreement that allows planning for the new stadium to move forward. Cooper assumed office in October and held off for months on launching needed demolition work at the new stadium site. After considerable back and forth, Cooper and Nashville SC announced an agreement in mid-February that allows the stadium plans to move forward, which came after the two sides worked out amendments to the project.
