In anticipation of this week’s Miami City Commission meeting to discuss a proposed redevelopment of the city’s Melreese Country Club, David Beckham and his partners have released a new Miami stadium rendering and video flyover to show how the development would look.
The stadium project calls for the MLS group to enter into a long-term lease to use the site for a development that will include a new 25,000-seat stadium, 600,000 square feet of entertainment/retail/ restaurant space, a “golf entertainment facility,” 400,000 square feet of office space, 750 hotel rooms and more, under the auspices of a Miami Freedom Park development. In addition, the group would fund 110 acres of green space through a $20 million contribution paid over 20 years.
All in all, the redevelopment would cost $1 billion, funded by the Beckham ownership group. The city is being asked to lease part of the Melreese Country Club, an action that will require voter approval in a fall referendum. The City Commission will be discussing such a referendum at this Thursday’s regularly scheduled meeting.
The video and rendering are clearly designed to drum up public support of the referendum, pointing out it’s a development initiative and not directly subsidizing a sports team. The soccer group would pay up to $5 million in the annual land lease and not seek an exemption from city, state or school taxes.
