Multiple reports have a rebranding of the Montreal Impact for the 2021 MLS season, as the team will reportedly change the team name to Montreal FC.
The Montreal FC name change was first reported by Radio-Canada.
It’s been the Montreal Impact since the team entered MLS, but the name change follows the MLS trend of city-centric branding and nicknames deemphasized. Any time you mess with branding, however, fans will resist the change, as outlined in this CTV article:
“I like the team,” one fan, named Jordan, told CTV News later in the day.
“But… I think they should keep the name how it is. I like the name already.”…
But it isn’t only people in the soccer world who wanted to weigh in. The Parti Québécois said that changing the name wouldn’t sit well with them, as “Football Club” or FC isn’t bilingual, while “Impact” is.
Again, nothing official has been announced by the team.
