Only one new facility is on the agenda for USL Championship in 2021, so in Colorado Springs and beyond fans are eager to track construction progress on Weidner Field, the new Switchbacks stadium.
In short: progress is being made before the impact of winter in Colorado Springs, with the team and its construction firm saying the project is now 75 percent completed. As a project seen by many as a blueprint development for future USL Championship facilities, Weidner Field will receive a lot of attention both within and outside the industry come 2021. From KOAA:
“What I love about the stadium we’ve put together is even though there are 8,000 seats, there is a wide variety of seating types, viewing types, fans will never be disconnected from the game,” [team president Nick] Fagain said.
The next few months will play out before fans very eyes as the team prepares for their 2021 USL Championship season, likely set to start around May 1st.
“They’ll see the bleachers going in over the next few weeks, the field turf going down in December and then the canopies will be up in January,” Fagain said. “Then the big thing that’s going to be impactful to the outside visual is the $5 million sculpture at the front entrance, that is going to be a huge deal.”
It’s expected the new stadium will be completed in plenty of time for the 2021 USL Championship season.

The new stadium is part of the larger City for Champions initiative in Colorado Springs The stadium will seat just over 8,000 for soccer matches, with that figure expandable to as much as 15,000 for events such as concerts. A mixed-use development component is also part of the project, as Weidner Apartment Homes will develop an apartment building overlooking the stadium. It will replace the 5,000-seat Weidner Field as the club’s home.
