Austin FC will celebrate a milestone Monday, when a groundbreaking ceremony is held for its upcoming stadium.

Set to begin play in 2021 as MLS‘s 27th team, Austin FC is an expansion club backed by Anthony Precourt‘s Two Oak Ventures. The team will play home matches at an upcoming $242 million, privately financed stadium that will be constructed at the city-owned McKalla Place in North Austin and is scheduled to open for the club’s inaugural season.

Work to complete the stadium will be marked by an early milestone with Monday morning’s groundbreaking ceremony. Originally scheduled for September 5 before being bumped to September 9, the event will feature Austin FC officials, along with MLS commissioner Don Garber, and Austin mayor Steve Adler. More from KXAN:

“(Monday) represents a milestone,” said President Andy Loughnane. “This will be a community gathering place, this will be a place for MLS matches, a place for concerts, community festivals, it will be a 365-day operation.”

The ground-breaking ceremonies are scheduled to begin Monday at 10:30 a.m. and will include Austin FC and Two Oak Ventures CEO Anthony Precourt, along with Austin Mayor Steve Adler and MLS Commissioner Don Garber.

The $240 million stadium is expected to take about 18 months to complete and is scheduled to be functional by Spring 2021 for the team’s inaugural season.

Austin FC is part of a wave of MLS expansion teams that are slated to launch over the coming seasons. Inter Miami CF and Nashville SC are set grow the league to 26 clubs when they begin play next year, with Austin FC following in 2021, and a recently announced St. Louis squad expected to begin play in 2022.
