An upcoming USL League One stadium is taking shape, as ground was broken Wednesday on South Georgia Tormenta FC‘s future Statesboro, GA home.

Tormenta FC is one of 10 teams competing in the upstart USL League One, a Division III circuit that begins play on Friday. For the 2019 season Tormenta FC will play home matches at Georgia Southern University’s Erk Russell Park, but the club is planning to open its own soccer-specific stadium in 2020.

A step toward completing the new Tormenta FC stadium was taken Wednesday, when the club broke ground on the facility. More from WSAV.com:

As the shovels went into the ground and picked up dirt this signified the beginning to construction on Tormenta FC’s new stadium. It’s expected to hold 5,300 people.

Tormenta president and owner Darin Van Tassell said this is a big deal for sports in Statesboro and Southeast Georgia.

It’s Statesboro’s first professional soccer team and the only professional team outside of metro Atlanta, but it’s also going to be the home of Georgia Southern men’s and women’s division one NCAA soccer teams, Van Tassell said.

Tormenta FC will compete in USL League One’s inaugural regular-season match Friday, when it hosts Greenville Triumph SC.
