Despite some last-minute lobbying to scuttle the plan, the Miami City Commission approved a 99-year lease for the Miami Freedom Park development, which includes a new Inter Miami CF stadium expected to open in the 2025 MLS season.
The vote was 4-1 in favor.
The 25,000-seat stadium is the centerpiece of the privately financed Miami Freedom Park multiuse development, which besides the new stadium will include office space, hotels, retail and a 58 acre park, set to be the largest public park in Miami. It will be built at the current Melreese Golf Course.
“An amazing day for the voters of our city, for the fans of fútbol and Inter Miami, and I want to sincerely thank the commissioners, the mayor, everyone who was involved in this process,” Inter Miami CF co-owner Jorge Mas said in a post-vote press conference. “No matter how difficult, how long, how frustrating, good days and bad days, I always knew that this would happen.”
As noted, there was a little debate along the day, with one commissioner arguing that the city was not receiving enough money to warrant a long-term lease, and another arguing the deal should have been opened to competitive bidding.
The team will continue to train in its 50,000-square foot training facility in Fort Lauderdale after the new stadium opens and until then play matches at temporary home DRV PNK Stadium.
Team co-owner David Beckham has this to say:

This is not the end of the political process for the new Inter Miami CF stadium: zoning changes still need to be approved in a later action. But last night’s vote was the key decision in this process.
