Potential High Point USL League One Club Being Discussed

High Point, NC could land a Division III USL League One club, as discussions are underway about placing a team at the city’s BB&T Point.

Built as part of a downtown redevelopment initiative, BB&T Point opened last May for professional baseball’s High Point Rockers (independent; Atlantic League). While primarily serving as a pro baseball home right now, the venue was designed to handle multiple types of events, including soccer and other sports.

In a move that would add to BB&T Point’s offerings, a USL League One team could be placed at the venue. During a city council meeting on Monday, a Forward High Point official stated that there are currently discussions underway about launching a USL League One club that would play at BB&T Point. Those plans are not final as of now, though the prospective soccer team could join the Rockers at BB&T Point in either 2021 or 2022 if the effort moves forward. More from The High Point Enterprise:

High Point is drawing closer toward a possible deal for a professional soccer team that would play at BB&T Point stadium.

Forward High Point Executive Director Ray Gibbs told the City Council Monday that negotiations are ongoing with USL League One, which is the third division of professional soccer in the U.S.

“It’s basically minor league soccer,” said Gibbs. “We have been working with what we think is an (ownership) investment group. If we can get the application in, we could be looking at the March 2021 season, if not the 2022 season.”

USL League One will play its second season this spring, featuring 12 teams. For more on BB&T Point, see this story written by Mark Cryan for sister site Ballpark Digest last summer.
