Well, this is something folks won’t forget: when Orlando City FC holds a groundbreaking for its new downtown stadium on Thursday, the occasion will be marked by 24 tons of purple sand.
The sand will be placed in a special ceremonial box for the groundbreaking. Afterwards, attendees will be issued clear paint cans (shown above) and have the chance to scoop up their own purple sand as a keepsake.
“October 16 will be a landmark day for the community of Parramore, the City of Orlando, Orange County, our fans and our Club,” said Orlando City President and Founder Phil Rawlins. “We look forward to hosting an unforgettable, festive celebration to mark the ceremonial start of construction of what will be the best soccer stadium in the league.”
The event, beginning at 5:00 p.m., is open to the public. Fans are asked to gather at Church Street Station, and then team officials will lead a march to the stadium site.
