Originally built in 1938, Clarke Stadium was significantly renovated in 2001 when the original stadium was razed to make way for a new one. It was renovated again between 2012 and 2013 when the FC Edmonton soccer club began playing there. Currently, FC Edmonton are the stadium’s only permanent tenants, but the old stadium was host to the Edmonton Eskimos, who played in the old Clarke Stadium between 1954 and 1976, before moving just up the block into the adjacent Commonwealth Stadium.
Clarke Stadium is a few minutes drive away from Edmonton’s city center and is also adjacent to several parks (Giovanni Caboto, Dawson) as well as the North Saskatchewan River. Indeed, Edmonton’s skyscrapers are visible from the stadium’s grandstand, reinforcing its proximity to its team’s namesake.
