Foundry St. Louis Releases MLS Stadium Rendering

St. Louis MLS stadium rendering

During a presentation on Tuesday, Foundry St. Louis unveiled renderings for its proposed MLS stadium

Foundry St. Louis has entered the mix in St. Louis’ push for an MLS expansion franchise, and has developed a concept for a new soccer-specific stadium. The facility would be constructed on a 13-acre parcel at Chouteau Avenue and Grand Boulevard, a site near the University of St. Louis in the city’s Midtown neighborhood.

At this point, there are two groups looking to organize the efforts for an MLS franchise in St. Louis. Along with Foundry St. Louis, there is MLS2STL, which has been focusing its efforts on a downtown stadium and is apparently considering its own options. More from KMOV.com:

St. Louis City sources confirm to News 4 they are looking at acquiring property near Union Station. The city is working with MoDOT to possibly purchase 30 acres located in the northeast quadrant of I-64 and 22nd street for a potential stadium

City leaders wouldn’t specify what role they would play in building the stadium, but say they are excited that multiple parties are working on proposals, saying it’s a testament that this will get done.

It’s unclear which group could have the edge. MLS2STL has big names in sports, but The Foundry says they want their efforts to be driven by the fans.

“We’re planning to involve the community in a lot of our decisions and that’s why we’re having this forum this evening,” explained [Foundry CEO Dan] Cordes. “I think that differentiates us and at the same time we’re working on investors and the stadium and the site.”

Aside from securing the stadium site, one key piece will be the funding. While there are no specifics at this point relating to the city’s role, a court case concerning stadium funding in the city could still have a factor and leave the use of city dollars in question.

The question of how the funding for the facility would look could become clearer over time. In the meantime, the presentation from Foundry St. Louis provides at lease one concept for how the effort could proceed.
