An upcoming Lansing USL League One squad will play at Cooley Law School Stadium, as the Lansing City Council has approved an agreement with the club.

Lansing, MI is set to field a team in the upstart USL League One–formerly known as USL Division III–that will play at Cooley Law School Stadium, the downtown home of baseball’s Lansing Lugnuts (Low A; Midwest League). The team will be backed by Tom Dickson, who also owns the Lugnuts, and will complete in the league’s inaugural 2019 season.

On Monday, the city council approved a five-year licensing agreement that effectively clears the way for the team to begin playing at Cooley Law School Stadium starting next spring. More from the Lansing State Journal:

City Council unanimously approved a deal Monday night to bring professional soccer to Lansing’s downtown baseball stadium beginning this spring.

The licensing agreement with Lansing Soccer Club LLC — the same ownership and management as the Lansing Lugnuts’ minor league baseball team — is for five years, running through 2023.

An official announcement regarding the team is expected to take place later this month. Lansing is poised to join a lineup of 2019 USL League One clubs that includes South Georgia Tormenta FC (Statesboro, Georgia), FC Tucson, Greenville Triumph SC, Madison Pro Soccer, Toronto FC II, Chattanooga Red Wolves SC, Orlando City B, and Richmond Kickers. In addition, the Rochester Rhinos and Penn FC have announced that they are shifting from USL Division II (set to be renamed USL Championship) to USL League One, but neither team is slated to begin League One play until 2020.
