Rochester Rhinos, City to Continue Negotiations

Rochester Rhinos

The City of Rochester and the Rochester Rhinos will continue negotiations, thus avoiding immediate eviction of the team from Capelli Sport Stadium.

At issue between the city and the Rhinos has been the organization’s status for 2018, as the Rhinos are not fielding a team for the upcoming USL season due to financial difficulties. That prompted the city, which owns Capelli Sport Stadium, to later claim that the decision put the Rhinos in default of their lease as operator of the facility. However, Rhinos owners David and Wendy Dworkin disputed that notion, believing that they would still be able to meet the terms of their lease despite not fielding a team in 2018.

Originally the city set a deadline at the end of February for the organization to vacate Capelli Sport Stadium, only to later extend that deadline to March 12. Though the March 12 deadline has passed, the Rhinos have not been evicted, as the city is expressing satisfaction with the progress of its ongoing discussions with the team. More from The Rochester Democrat & Chronicle:

“The city and the tenant are actively engaged in negotiations, and the city is satisfied with the progress of the negotiations,” city Corporation Counsel Tim Curtin said in an emailed statement. “We do not see a need to enforce the deadline at this time while we make progress in our discussions.”

The city had already extended the deadline from Feb. 28 for the Rochester Rhinos to vacate the city-owned downtown soccer stadium. Officials did not elaborate on the negotiations or reason for optimism….

Reached Monday afternoon, David Dworkin said only that the Rhinos remained actively involved in negotiations with the city.

Though they are not fielding a team for the upcoming 2018 season, the Rhinos have indicated that they intend to remain a member in good standing with the USL.
