Atlanta United FC Sets New MLS Attendance Record

Atlanta United FC

With over 72,000 fans on hand at Mercedes-Benz StadiumAtlanta United FC set a new MLS attendance record in its match on Sunday.

For Sunday’s match against D.C. United, Atlanta reported a crowd of 72,035. That resulted in a new MLS single-game attendance record, breaking the previous high mark that Atlanta United established last October.

Upon beginning MLS play as an expansion club last year, Atlanta became one of the biggest attendance success stories in the league. That trend continued on Sunday, the club’s 2018 home opener and its third record-breaking crowd since September 16, 2017. More from The Atlanta Journal-Constitution:

Atlanta United broke its MLS single-game attendance record with 72,035 tickets sold and distributed. Atlanta United set the league single-game record of 71,874 against Toronto on Oct. 22, 2017. That mark broke the record of 70,425 it set against Orlando City on Sept. 16.

As a dual-purpose NFL/MLS venue, Mercedes-Benz Stadium is capable of holding crowds of over 70,000. While not every Atlanta United crowd will be 70,000+ — the team plans on limiting crowds to the first and second levels for most matches — the club’s attendance numbers will be something to monitor as the season unfolds. Our 2018 MLS Attendance page has been updated to include week two numbers, and will be updated on a weekly basis throughout the season.
