Allianz Field will feature a United sculpture that honors fans of Minnesota United FC, as the club has unveiled a tribute to members of the Itasca Society. Limited to 11,842 fans — one for every lake in Minnesota — the society is made up of season ticket holders who supported the club during its inaugural MLS season in 2017.
The sculpture, which will stand at the stadium’s southwest corner near Snelling Ave and I-94, will consist of 12-foot-high letters spelling out the word “U-N-I-T-E-D.” Seeking to balance space constraints and legibility, MNUFC gave members of the Itasca Society the opportunity to provide a limited number of characters for an individual or family name. The result is more than 4,000 individuals, families and businesses represented on the letters, which will span more than 65 feet when completed.
“This sculpture provides an unmistakable image for all who pass by, and with it a clear reminder of who we are and the principles for which we stand,” said MNUFC Managing Partner Dr. Bill McGuire. “The word ‘United’ is a central element of our club and it symbolizes our goals of unifying our fans, our players, our community and our region around soccer and shared principles. We are honored to commemorate our Itasca Society members on this iconic work of art.”
Allianz Field is currently under construction in St. Paul, and remains on pace to open for the 2019 MLS season. United FC will return to TCF Bank Stadium for its 2018 home slate after playing there in 2017.
