Audi Field Construction Continues to Unfold

Audi Field

Work continues on the construction of Audi Field, the new soccer-specific stadium in Buzzard Point that should open for D.C. United next summer.

Earlier this year, ground was broken on Audi Field, marking a milestone for United, a franchise that had long sought a new facility to replace RFK Stadium. Given that the groundbreaking ceremony did not take place until February, United has not been slated to move into Audi Field at the start of the 2018 season. Instead, it has been expected that the club will begin playing at the new stadium during the season, with their first matches of 2018 scheduled on the road.

That would mean that the club’s final games at RFK Stadium will take place this fall. According to The Washington Post, which recently provided some images of the ongoing construction, the club is still expected to play on the road next season until Audi Field opens:

Construction of D.C. United’s new stadium at Buzzard Point in Southwest, three blocks from Nationals Park, has made substantial progress in the six-plus months since the ceremonial groundbreaking. The club is aiming to open the 20,000-capacity venue next June.

In order to play a full home schedule in the new digs in 2018, United will begin the campaign with approximately 12 consecutive away matches. Barring a late surge by the last-place team this season, United will make its final appearance at RFK Stadium after 22 seasons (some 400 home dates) on Oct. 22 against the New York Red Bulls.

RFK Stadium has been D.C. United’s home since the club’s inaugural season in 1996. The organization has made progress with the new stadium this year, including the beginning of the construction process and the announcement of Audi as a naming rights partner in February.
