The San Jose Earthquakes appointed some new leadership on Tuesday, when Tom Fox was introduced as the club’s president.
Last week, it was reported that Fox–a former English Premier League executive–was set to be introduced as the Quakes new president. In assuming the role, Fox is taking over for Dave Kaval, who was originally named team president in 2010.
Kaval is stepping aside to focus on a different sport, as he was named the president of Major League Baseball’s Oakland A’s last fall. While he and the A’s will continue to actively pursue a new ballpark, Fox will have a different set of goals for the Quakes. In addition to building a more competitive club, Fox is stressing that he will look to connect the organization with the community. More from The San Jose Mercury News:
“When the Earthquakes returned (in 2008) it was a journey to find concrete and girders to get that job done. Now it is people. It won’t be as visible as pouring concrete and putting seats in a stadium. But it will be equally important.
“Our ability to connect with the community is fundamental to what we want to be. I need to understand what the club means to the community and what it can mean to continue to make it as strong as possible. I think we can be in this city the thing that is known for.”
Fox’s background includes stints as an executive with Aston Villa and Arsenal F.C.
