Sacramento Republic FC Stadium Opposed by Labor Organizations

Proposed Sacramento stadium

As a key vote on the Sacramento Republic FC stadium proposal approaches, two labor organizations are voicing their opposition.

In a letter to the Sacramento City Council, the Sacramento Labor Council AFL-CIO and UNITE Here Local 49 voiced their disappointment with the stadium project. Their issues with the stadium stem from the fact that the Republic will not commit to allowing organized food-service unions to work on the facility.

The letter, which can be seen here, claims that other MLS stadiums in California recognize similar labor unions, as does the Sacramento Kings’ Golden 1 Center. “Why should the City of Sacramento pave the way for a huge development that will create nothing but poverty jobs for Sacramentans?,” the letter asks. “Why can’t the owners of the Republic commit to creating good jobs, so as to benefit the whole community?”

This letter was delivered in advance of the city council’s major vote on Thursday. More from the Sacrmento Bee:

A spokeswoman for Republic FC was not immediately available for comment.

The City Council is scheduled to vote Thursday night on an environmental impact report for the railyard development that includes the construction of a new 19,621-seat stadium. The stadium would only be built if Sacramento is awarded an expansion franchise in Major League Soccer.

The $226 million stadium would be privately financed. But a preliminary financing term sheet approved by the council last year credits public agencies with already allocating $46 million in infrastructure improvements in the railyard.

Sacramento’s planning and design commission approved the stadium in October.
