D.C. United Awards Construction Contract

New D.C. United Stadium

In a major milestone toward the completion of a new Buzzard Point stadium, the D.C. United have selected Turner Construction Company as the project’s contractor.

The D.C. United’s new stadium has been in the works for years, but developments of late have pointed to it opening in 2018. A ceremonial groundbreaking was held this spring, and planners also took the step last year of incorporating fan feedback into Populous‘ design.

Given the years it has taken to pull the project together and the potential for spin off development that has been touted by the team and the city, the new D.C. United stadium is a highly-anticipated project. In order to carry out the construction process, the team has tabbed a contractor with plenty of experience. More from the Washington Business Journal:

The New York-based contractor, whose projects include Yankee Stadium in the Bronx and Lambeau Field’s redevelopment in Green Bay, Wisconsin, is expected to start construction later this year. Kansas City-based Populous designed the 19,000-seat soccer-only stadium.

Turner posted $476 million in metro-area revenue last year, making it the region’s sixth-largest general contractor. It collaborated with Smoot Construction on the restoration of the Capitol dome and is building the Conrad Hotel at CityCenterDC.

Estimates place the stadium’s final price tag at $300 million. Under the current terms, the city and the D.C. United are evenly splitting the cost, with government paying for land and infrastructure and the team paying for construction.
