Atlanta United FC Reports Robust Sales for Opener

Atlanta United FC

Early signs point to a big crowd at Bobby Dodd Stadium on March 5, as Atlanta United FC has exceeded the 40,000 ticket sales mark.

One of two expansion clubs that will launch in 2017–along with Minnesota–Atlanta opens the season with plenty of intrigue. Later this year, the team is set to move into Mercedes-Benz Stadium, its state-of-the-art new home that will be shared with the NFL’s Falcons. Perhaps the buzz of a new franchise and a new stadium has captivated fan interest, something that was apparent last summer when the United set a new record for MLS expansion season tickets.

That level of fan support is also evident for the team’s planned run at Bobby Dodd Stadium. Primarily the home of Georgia Tech football, Bobby Dodd Stadium is filling in as a temporary venue for the United, whose first game at the still-under-construction Mercedes-Benz Stadium is scheduled for July.

The total capacity of Bobby Dodd Stadium is 55,000, and the United are working to see if every seat in the facility can be sold for the opener. More from AJC.com:

Club President Darren Eales said the team is on pace to sell out the stadium, which has a capacity of 55,000.

“We are going to go for it and look to sell it out,” he said.

The team sold more than 10,000 single-game tickets in seven days starting Feb. 2, when those ticket sales started. Those and sales of season-tickets spiked again following last week’s 4-0 win over Chattanooga.

Atlanta will face the New York Red Bulls in the opener. The match is set to begin at 7:30 p.m.
