D.C. United has unveiled new renderings of the team’s future stadium, providing some different glimpses of the venue in Buzzard Point

Last month, the United rolled out additional renderings of the stadium through social media. Numerous preliminary concepts of the venue had been made public to that point, but more recently released information from the United shines a light on the amenities outside the stadium.

For instance, the rendering above depicts a public plaza that will connect the stadium and a planned hotel. The 65,000 square foot space will also serve as a public gathering place, providing room for vendors, live broadcast sets, and shaded seating areas. The plaza will remain open to the public on non-gamedays, and provide a splash fountain.

Among the other revelations from the United’s announcement is the use of 1st Street. On game days, 1st Street will be closed to create a block-party-like atmosphere and allow for better pedestrian access. The road, which will be realigned for this project, will be open to cars, bicyclists, and public transportation.

Bicycle seems to be an actively encouraged mode of transportation by the United. One of the main features of the team’s offices on the south side of the stadium, shown below, will be a bike valet area.

The United will also incorporate bike parking areas along 2nd street, in an area that hosts what the team is calling parklets. Parklets (shown below) will be small seating areas outside the stadium gates that serve as a gathering place for attendees, while offering seating options.

From the looks of these renderings, the United are placing a strong emphasis on a design that encourages foot traffic and bicycling in the area surrounding the stadium. Plazas are becoming key elements at facilities in all sports, and the United and designer Populous have certainly made them a focal point.

The new D.C. United stadium is expected to cost about $300 million, with the team and the District splitting the cost. It is scheduled to open in 2018.
