Sacramento Republic FC preps for new stadium

Sacramento Republic FCSacramento Republic FC will play its final game at its temporary home, Hughes Stadium, before moving to a new stadium at Cal Expo — another temporary venue.

Sacramento Republic FC has drawn well during its first two games at Hughes Stadium, attracting a crowd of 20,000+ for the team’s debut and slightly less for a second match. This week sees a third match before the move to Cal Expo.

Which could be great or could be horrible. The temporary stadium at Cal Expo seats only 8,000 or so, which means the team will take a hit on the attendance front, but it will feature a regulation pitch — something lacking at Hughes Stadium. And in some ways the Cal Expo stadium will be less convenient than Hughes Stadium, which is served by light rail and is very accessible.

Still, the Cal Expo stadium will be a good test of how Sacramento Republic FC draws in the future. It’s no secret Sacramento Republic FC sees Cal Expo as a temporary venue: ownership wants to move to MLS in the future and sees a new downtown stadium if that happens.
